🏛️How North Carolina's DMV system is structured

120+ Driver License Offices statewide · agency: North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NC DMV)

In North Carolina, driver licensing is handled by the NC DMV at Driver License Offices throughout the state. Vehicle titling and registration are handled at separate License Plate Agencies — many of which are privately operated agents of the NC DMV. The split means North Carolinians typically visit two different offices: one for the driver's license, one for the car's registration.

NC DMV operates 120+ Driver License Offices across all 100 North Carolina counties. The largest urban areas (Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Durham, Asheville) have multiple offices, with substantial wait-time differences between specific branches in the same metro. Most North Carolinians can renew their license entirely online via PayIt NC DMV, eliminating the in-person visit.

For new licenses, road tests, REAL ID first-time issuance, and out-of-state transfers, in-person service at a Driver License Office is required. The Skip the Line online appointment system is the difference between a 30-minute visit and a 3-hour wait at busy metro offices.

North Carolina splits services between Driver License Offices (handle driver licensing) and License Plate Agencies (handle vehicle registration and titling). Most Tar Heels visit both for different transactions.
