🏛️How New Jersey's DMV system is structured
40+ Licensing Centers and Vehicle Centers · agency: New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC)
New Jersey uniquely splits motor-vehicle services between two facility types: Licensing Centers handle driver-license services (new licenses, renewals, REAL ID, road tests), while Vehicle Centers handle vehicle titling and registration. Some larger Agencies combine both functions and are called "Driver Testing & Licensing Centers." For most NJ residents, this means visiting two different offices for different transactions.
NJ MVC operates 40+ facilities across the state, with the heaviest concentration in the densely-populated north (Bergen, Hudson, Essex, Union, Passaic counties). The MVC has invested heavily in online services since 2021, and most renewals can be handled entirely online via NJ MVC Online Services for eligible drivers.
For new licenses, road tests, REAL ID first-time issuance, and out-of-state transfers, in-person service is required, and an appointment via the NJ MVC online portal is essentially mandatory — walk-in service for these transactions is generally not available at most Licensing Centers.
New Jersey splits services between Licensing Centers (handle driver licensing only) and Vehicle Centers (handle vehicle titling and registration only). Some larger Agencies are full-service "Driver Testing & Licensing Centers" that combine both functions.
